Dash Cam Parking Mode and ‘12v battery drain due to electronic devices’ Warning

I have had my Sportage MHEV since June and have invested in my first ever dash cam. It’s a Blackvue DR590X-1CH and it includes intelligent park mode which monitors for any bumps and will record as appropriate, while the car is parked and unattended.

I had it fitted by Halfords. They have wired it into the tailgate release fuse in the fuse box. Each time I get in the car I get the “12v battery drain due to electronic devices” warning and have ignored it so far. I don’t want a flat battery and the hassle that would bring.

I note from the product description on Halfords website “Thanks to in-built power management circuitry, the DR590X-1CH will ensure that your camera will never deplete your vehicle’s battery when operating overnight, switching-off should the car’s battery level drop below a pre-set level.”

Should I switch off the parking mode (assuming I can) to prevent battery issues? Does anyone have any advice please?

Seems a strange choice of fuse for Halfords to use as it is not a permanent live, otherwise you would be able to open tailgate whenever you felt like without unlocking car. Mine is a HEV model and the interior fuse box has several spares, I have attached a picture of the two spares I used, one is ignition live and the other permanent live, have never had an warnings or low battery etc and mine is set to 24 hour surveillance mode.

Having had a closer look it appears to use two fuses. There are definitely two piggyback fuse connections (see below photo of my fuse box)

I am not technical - this is why I paid Halfords £50 to install. I had to go back as it was, as I couldn’t open the boot after. The girl who installed forgot to add a fuse! I think I might just turn off the parking mode since it spends most of its life parked on the drive

HI I get this message also but I don't have my dashcam wired up to a fuse I have 2 on (front and rear) when the ignition or accessories are on (via plug in front and rear), it would not bother me but I can't listen to the radio when parked up waiting for my better half to come back from the shops. It says start up your engine if you want to use any devices (WHO IN THIS DAY AND AGE WANTS TO SIT WITH THEIR ENGINE RUNNING WASTING FUEL?) I have a diesel Mild Hybrid 1.6 I have a normal car battery in the engine and the lithium batteries too! My last car was also the version 4 sportage but never came up with this nonesense. I don't listen to the radio anymore when sitting parked in case I end up with a flat battery (not very happy but I am due its first service soon so will see what they say about this?)

Sounds very much like the 12v battery is on the way out, easy to have checked at a reputable Tyre & Battery dealer who will use a load tester to tell you the state of the battery. Even though nothing is on, if the battery is failing the voltage will drop when not being used to a level that the car computer feels is below par....

In response to you all I have the 5th gen Sportage on a 72 plate and it is coming up for its first year service so would not suspect the battery? I have informed the agent (Fiskens of Forfar) and they are advising that because of all the stuff that goes on now with the car the batteries are pretty hungry intensive and that is why the warning comes on in time so as not to be let down, but advise to be aware and not be caught out by starting up the engine or turning everything off. But they will check it when it comes in as long as I remember them on the day. I just feel that you should not be encouraged to start up in about 10 or 15 mins I thought the whole point of Hybrid even Mild Hybrid was to be making savings not making you run your car or do without the radio! I will let you know after it has had its service which is not until nearly the end of next month but thanks for your replies.

Hi It has been some time now and TBH I don't know what fuse it was now as it was Halfords who done this wiring and fitting but I can inform you that as I have had ongoing issues with warnings about the battery SO, I had the camera unistalled again to eliminate trying to work out what was going on ( and TBH also so Kia could not blame the camera for the battery faults!) and the result was and still is there is STILL the problem with the battey but as far as the dealership is concerned the battery is fine!! ( they have ran 2 tests and still come up with the usual answers which are charge the battery, or they blame the app) but even with the new app it is still the same. I have given up a long time ago on it as it has never let me down yet! it is just a nuiscance and I see that there IS know problems on this matter just Kia dealership are in denial. I am due to replace my car in October so have been putting up with this irration as it is like bangin your head against a brick wall. It is a Motability car so I have no choice as I have to renew it in October anyway and as it is a Diesel MH I could not get another one the same anyway as diesels are discontinued in the UK ( you can still get them in Europe Italy I think and you can still get a diesel citreon if you want it doesn't make sense as this is a superb car apart from this issue. so don't be to quick in blaming your dash cam it still gives me problems with it removed and I don't even use the radio if parked up now (I was told by the foreman that he would not trust anything on without the engine running as there is far too much in there nowadays) I might add that my car always does LONG JOURNEYS no short journeys because of my location so there is no excuse it should be well charged but the app now the NEWreports Abnormal on the battery app? the sailing when it works (not often) still won't cut out the engine either so Good Luck don't blame it on your dash cam.
